Although not perfect, the Corvette has proven to be MY favorite car time and time again and I don't need to get into a dick measuring contest to prove it. But as we get close to Sebring, I started thinking about the fight between Porsche and Corvette and how all that racing technology transfers to street cars. I guess the folks at Porsche's Excellence Magazine had the same thoughts and decided to find out what happens when you pit the ultimate street versions against each other.
As we gear up for the 12 hours of Sebring, we've been hearing a lot from the folks at Corvette Racing about the benefits that racing brings to the production Corvettes. Chevy brings this prominent theme of track-to-street technology transfer a full circle with the announcement of a special Z06 that is born from the lessons learned in racing. Meet the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.
Like F1, Porsche has built a hybrid race car that uses regenerative braking to make extra power. No show car, this one will be racing in the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring.
The Smoking Tire is a car-focused internet show that balances entertainment and information perfectly to produce shows about the world of cars that won't put you to sleep. This week they head to Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch to pit Lamborghini's Special Edition Gallardo against 2 modified exotics. Can the $200,000 Italian bull keep up with 1000hp? Watch to find out.
I got an email today from Corvette Racing announcing they are starting a video series to document the team through the 2010 American Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The preview video as you will see is very well-done and now I am even more fired up for the first race of the season later this month at Sebring.
As Corvette Racing gears up for the start of the 2010 American Le Mans Series, the team is releasing additional details regarding the changes needed for competing in the now unified GT class. The most notable change for the GT Corvettes is the new LS5.5R V8 engine. Built alongside its LS9, LS7 and LS3 dry-sump brethrens at the Performance Build Center in Wixom, this new LS7 based engine is slimmed down to 5.5 liters and delivers 485 horsepower at 5800 rpms.
Texas legend Delmo Johnson is one of the pioneers of Corvette road racing with a career that goes back to the early days. His lengthy list of significant Corvette racers he has piloted include Grand Sports #003 and #004 and C1 and C2 Corvettes raced under the Gulf Oil banner. In the early 1990's, after many years in retirement, some friends encouraged him to come out and race one more time and this 1968/74 Corvette was his ride.
Corvette Racing has announced the signing of Frenchman Emmanuel Collard to its stable of drivers. The veteran GT/Prototype driver will join Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta in the #4 Corvette C6.R ZR1 for the endurance races at Sebring, Le Mans and Petit Le Mans. Collard will be replacing Marcel Fassler who was hired by Audi to co-drive one of its R15 TDIs this year at Le Mans.
Rod Saboury is used to making cars go fast, but his latest project tops them all. Taking seven years to build, the 1963 Corvette is a show car, street car and race car all rolled into one fiberglass body. And boy does this Corvette roll. During last summer's Super Chevy show at Summit Motor Sports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, the 2,400 horsepower Sting Ray launched from zero to 60 mph in 1 second and crossed the quarter-mile mark in 6.95 seconds at 210.54 mph.
Our friends at Bad Boy Vettes hooked up with driver Oliver Gavin to give us an inside look at what the driver is seeing and doing as he makes his way around the historic and very bumpy 3.7 mile 17-turn road course.
The Corvette Racing team was recently in Central Florida for a private test at Sebring International Raceway. During the session, these official photos were taken.

Switzer's P800 GTR Nissan and a pair of highly tuned Audi turbos make a series of 1/4 mile runs, and the GTR delivers with back-to-back 10.4 sec. runs at over 133 mph!
The amateur video shot from the stands shows the conclusion of the ALMS race at Laguna Seca. The video clearly captures what we believed the sequence of events were all along: Magnussen was in front of Bergmeister in the Flying Lizards Porsche and was pulling away. Contact between the two cars caused the #3 Corvette C6.R to spin in front of the #45 Porsche and hard into the inside wall.
What would you say about an SLR powered kart? Well, we don't think that would be possible, and even if it did, it would be pure suicide. The members of the SLR Club however
