August is a busy month for most of the preeminent automotive auction houses and RM Auctions is no exception. This weekend they host their highly anticipated Sports & Classics of Monterey event in Monterey, California. One of the Corvettes that will be offered for sale is the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 "Scuderia Filipinetti" Le Mans race car which is expected to fetch in the neighborhood of $500,000 – $700,000.

Fifty-six years ago today, the very first production Corvettes were completed and rolled off a temporary assembly line at Chevrolet's Customer Delivery Center in Flint, Michigan. All the Corvettes were hand-built and for the first time in a mass produced vehicle, a revolutionary material called fiberglass was used instead of steel to make the body panels.

For those of us who were wondering what became of the #002 Grand Sport Corvette following its failure to sell at RM's Arizona auction earlier this year, we learned today the former racer has found a new home at one of the premiere automotive racing museums in the country, the Simeone Foundation Museum in Philadelphia.
