Ever since man began making cars for more than just getting from A to B, two-door coupes have been a sign of automotive enthusiasm and overall sportiness that a four-door sedan simply could not fulfill. A recent wave of sport sedans and four-door coupes have been introduced to the market, but for us sports car enthusiasts, they just aren’t good enough.
A favorite genre of many auto fiends is the “sleeper” - a car that looks like grandma’s Mercury but goes like stink. In this day and age of flashy, showy performance - with all the standard body kits, huge spoilers and obnoxious red badging automakers seem to believe belong on performance cars, the sleeper is a dying breed.
Air Power Systems (APS) set out to deliver a thoroughly engineered high horsepower intercooled twin turbo system for the new Pontiac G8. With over 25 years of turbocharging and intercooling experience, they have possibly produced the ultimate intercooled twin turbo system for the Pontiac G8.
Last month Holden celebrated its 60th anniversary with the unveiling of the Coupe60 concept car, a two door version of the VE Commodore sedan that many suspect will eventually spawn a successor to Australia’s Monaro Coupe.
To some it's Deja vu; to others it was simply a matter of time before GM tried to market another Holden in the United States. This time, however, the offer seems to have something to please everyone-and plenty to scare its competitors.
GM announced today that they will be phasing out the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010. This news came right after they announced they will also be cutting 21,000 hourly jobs and reducing their dealer count by 42% within the same time frame. This, in an effort to stay out of bankruptcy, of course.
50 Cent along with Maximum Bob Lutz unveiled the Pontiac G8 GXP, and specifically its optional six-speed manual transmission. The G8 comes with a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 pulled from the Corvette, making 402 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque.
50 Cent - Amusement Park - Pontiac G8 and Pontiac G6 GXP as co-stars
You can't really blame Pontiac for giving its Pontiac G8 Concept and Pontiac G6 GXP to rapper 50 Cent to use in his video for the song "Amusement Park". After all, pick a premium nameplate like Bentley, Rolls Royce, Lamborghini or Ferrari and one could find at least half a dozen music videos in which each marque has been featured prominently.
So I just got off a conference call with the fine folks at the Pontiac Underground blog, and I thought I should answer a few questions that I’m sure many of you are asking yourselves regarding GM killing off Pontiac.
Needless to say, the tone of the call was somewhat bleak, but they were happy to answer all questions. I’ll go over a few questions that I’ve received regarding this, and a few other things that they mentioned on the call:
50 Cent is a busy man, and his appearance at SEMA is for more than just show. The night before the convention started, 50 unveiled the new Pontiac G8 surrounded by GM executives, automotive suppliers and journalists in a ballroom at the Wynn Las Vegas.
It seems like this recent hope of reviving old brands has a limit. The Challenger, Camaro, and other retro-styled cars have made it through, but the El Camino apparently has not. The new Camino, in the form of the Pontiac G8 ST, caused a lot of eyebrows to be raised when it was first released. After all, it hardly seemed to be the right vehicle for the times. And quite honestly, it’s not.
GM Holden celebrated today as the first Pontiac G8 engineering prototypes to be produced at Holden Vehicle Operations in Elizabeth rolled off the line.
The G8 will be available in Pontiac dealerships in the United States in early 2008 to take its place among General Motors' flagship high performance vehicles.
